The First World War (1914-1918), also called World War I, was a global war that involved many countries, including Britain, India, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and others. It began in July 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, which triggered political tensions between nations. The war was fought mainly in Europe but had worldwide impact. India, which was under British rule at the time, played an important role in the war. The British Indian government sent over one million Indian soldiers to fight in various regions such as Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Indian soldiers fought bravely in battles like those in France, Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, and East Africa. India also provided large amounts of money, food, and raw materials to support the war. The war had a huge impact on India. It created economic hardships due to increased taxes and shortages of goods. However, it also led to the growth of Indian industries to meet war demands. The participation of Indians in the war also increased political awareness and national pride. Many Indian leaders, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, pointed out the sacrifices made by Indians and demanded greater political rights after the war. The First World War ended in 1918 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which imposed heavy penalties on Germany. Over 15 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war. India's role in World War I is remembered as an important part of its history, as it showed the loyalty and contribution of Indian soldiers and resources. It also became a turning point that encouraged Indians to demand self-rule. The war reshaped global politics, led to the collapse of empires, and set the stage for future movements, including India's struggle for independence.
