The Revolt of 1857, also known as the First War of Indian Independence, was a major uprising against British rule in India. It began in May 1857 in Meerut and spread quickly to many parts of northern and central India. The revolt was caused by a combination of political, economic, social, and military reasons. Politically, the British had annexed many Indian states under the Doctrine of Lapse and removed many local rulers, creating anger among rulers and soldiers. Economically, heavy taxes, destruction of traditional industries, and unfair trade policies hurt peasants, artisans, and zamindars (landowners). Social and religious causes also played a role, as the British interfered in Indian customs and traditions. A major spark of the revolt was the introduction of the Enfield rifle cartridges, which were rumored to be greased with cow and pig fat, offending both Hindus and Muslims. The revolt started when Indian soldiers, called sepoys, refused to use these cartridges. The British punished the sepoys, which led to a rebellion in Meerut on 10 May 1857. The revolt spread to Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi, and other regions. Leaders like Mangal Pandey, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, Nana Sahib, and Begum Hazrat Mahal became symbols of resistance. Delhi became the center of the revolt when the rebels declared Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, as their leader. Though the revolt was widespread and fierce, it lacked unity and organization, and the British forces eventually suppressed it by 1858. The revolt marked the end of the Mughal Empire and changed the way the British ruled India. After 1857, the British Crown took direct control of India, ending the rule of the East India Company. The Revolt of 1857 became a symbol of India's struggle for freedom and inspired future generations to fight for independence. Even though it failed, it remains an important milestone in Indian history as the first major effort to challenge British rule.
