Mahavira's life refers to the life story of the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, who played a crucial role in shaping the teachings and philosophy of Jain tradition. Mahavira, also known as Vardhamana, was born in 599 BCE in Kundagrama, near Vaishali, in present-day Bihar, India, into a royal Kshatriya family. His father was King Siddhartha, and his mother was Queen Trishala. From an early age, Mahavira showed deep spiritual inclinations and compassion for all living beings. At the age of 30, despite his comfortable life as a prince, he renounced worldly possessions and pleasures to seek truth and liberation. He embraced an ascetic life, leaving his home, family, and kingdom behind, and wandered in search of spiritual knowledge. For the next twelve years, Mahavira practiced severe austerities, deep meditation, and self-discipline to overcome desires and attachments. He followed the path of non-violence (Ahimsa), truthfulness (Satya), non-stealing (Asteya), celibacy (Brahmacharya), and non-possessiveness (Aparigraha). At the age of 42, while meditating in deep solitude at a place called Jivana Giri, Mahavira attained Kevala Jnana (absolute knowledge or enlightenment) and became a Tirthankara - a spiritual guide who teaches the path to liberation. After attaining enlightenment, Mahavira spent the next 30 years preaching his doctrines across India, emphasizing moral discipline, non-violence, self-control, and respect for all life forms. His teachings were compiled by his disciples as the Jain Agamas. Mahavira's life exemplifies renunciation, compassion, and the pursuit of truth. He attained Moksha (liberation) at the age of 72 at Pavapuri. Mahavira's legacy continues to inspire millions worldwide, making him one of the greatest spiritual leaders in history. His life is a model of dedication to truth, ethical living, and spiritual awakening.
