In India, the census is conducted every ten years by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The first modern census of India was held in 1872, and since 1881 it has been conducted regularly every decade. The Census of India is the largest administrative exercise in the world, covering more than a billion people across diverse languages, religions, and cultures. Main objectives of the census include counting the total population, recording demographic characteristics such as age, sex, literacy, religion, language, occupation, and providing statistical data for socio-economic planning. It also helps in understanding population growth trends, density, urbanization rates, and migration patterns. The census also plays a key role in determining the allocation of seats in the Parliament and state assemblies through the process of delimitation.
